2015 NASCAR Preview

Here we go.

The 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup series is almost here. Saturday we start out the year with the Sprint Unlimited. I think this race is for those who can’t wait until some real important racing gets underway. That for me will be this coming Thursday when the Budweiser Duels are run. This is when I get really interested in the season. I know that there is qualifying on Sunday for the Daytona 500, but that only sets the top two positions and we all know that it doesn’t really matter where you start at Daytona, it’s whether or not you can avoid the big wreck and put yourself in position to win the Great American Race.

Last year was the first year of the new championship format and it was more exciting than I thought it was going to be. I just wish they wouldn’t have one race decide the eventual champion. I do believe that Kevin Harvick deserved to win the championship and he was the best driver on the track week in and week out last year. I just think that a blown tire, accident, or blown engine will knock out a deserving driver in the not so distant future with this system and it is hard to fathom a driver running so well all year and not winning a championship because of one race in 36.

2014 Homestead-Miami Speedway, Ford EcoBoost 400

NASCAR Homestead-Miami Speedway

The field is set for the first championship race under the new Chase format. Four drivers and four different owners will vie for the championship this week at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The four drivers and their respective teams are Kevin Harvick, driving in his first season for Stewart-Haas Racing, Joey Logano, driving for Penske Racing, Denny Hamlin, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, and Ryan Newman driving for Childress Racing. None of these drivers has ever won a Sprint Cup championship, but that will change for one of them this weekend.

Out of these four drivers, the one who comes away with the best finishing position this week will become the new Sprint Cup champion. Hopefully they all have great cars and we can see who really deserves to win the championship in a close race. The intensity of this race is going to be something hardly ever seen in any professional sport. Every pit stop, every restart, and every crew chief decision will have a bearing on who win the championship.

FORD ECOBOOST 400

Kevin Harvick: I am going to pick Kevin to win the championship and do it by winning the race this weekend. This team has been the fastest and most consistent of all the teams left in the Chase, they haven’t had mechanical issues lately, and they qualify well every week. I think they win the pole and the race. Although he has never won a race here, Kevin has finished in the top ten in nine of his last ten starts at this track.

Joey Logano: Joey has only been slightly behind Kevin when it comes to being fast and consistent, especially on the mile and a half tracks. I think this team will once again qualify in the top five and make this an exciting race all the way to the end. Joey has only run five races at this track and came away with his best finish last season when he came away in eighth place.

Denny Hamlin: Don’t count this team out. Denny won this race last season and that is what you need to do to guarantee yourself a championship this year. This team is going to come into this race with a lot of confidence and should be able to have a great setup under their car when they unload it from the trailer. In nine starts at this track, Denny has two wins and five top ten finishes. Any of these drivers can be this year’s champion.

Ryan Newman: Hardly anyone gave this team a chance to even make it to the second round of the Chase, but here they are in the championship race. Ryan is also in his first year with Richard Childress Racing and he never gives up. This can be seen in the pass he made on the last lap of the race at Phoenix and I’m sure he is going to do something very nice for Kyle Larson after he used him to stay off the wall and make the pass he needed to make it to this round. Ryan’s best finish at Homestead-Miami was a third place finish he came away with two years ago.

Jeff Gordon: Jeff missed the final round of the Chase by the narrowest of margins and that will give him incentive to win the race this weekend. Even though he can’t be the champion this season, they can show everyone what they could have done if they would have had on more point heading into the final race of the year. Jeff won this race two years ago and has finished in the top ten in eleven of his fifteen career starts here.

Carl Edwards: Carl has two wins at this track, but he has struggled at the mile and a half tracks this season. I think his team was doing everything they could for him while he still had a shot at the championship, but now they are probably looking towards next season without Carl. Carl is moving to Joe Gibbs Racing next year and will be replaced with Trevor Bayne who will run full-time for Roush/Fenway Racing.

Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie has never won a race at Homestead, but that might be because all he had to do was stay out of trouble to win championships. This week he will have nothing to lose and can cross this track off his bucket list if he can get his first win here. I really think that this team is going to try some different things this weekend to see if they can figure out why they weren’t as good as past seasons.

Greg Biffle: Greg won three races in a row from 2004 to 2006 at this track, but has struggled here a bit after it was reconfigured. He is another Roush driver that hasn’t had the speed that the Penske teams have had this season, even though both teams run the same engines under the hood. I would have to guess that there is something missing from their aero package and they would like to figure that out before next season.

Tony Stewart: Tony has also won three races at this track, but this team has struggled on this type of track this year. It really seems odd that they have done so, when Kevin Harvick has been just the opposite and they both run for the same organization. Tony won the first two races he ran at this track and then won his third race here two years ago. Winning this race would give this team a boost they need as they head into the off season.

Matt Kenseth: Matt finished second in this race last season and doesn’t want to go into the off-season knowing he didn’t win a race this year after winning six races the previous season. This team is going to do everything they can to find the speed they need to win a race on an intermediate track and then come back next year and win multiple races before the start of the Chase.

2014 Phoenix International Raceway, Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500

I know one thing for sure about the new Chase format. The drivers that are in contention will do anything and everything they can to move into the final round. That means they don’t care what happens to the other drivers who are in the same position as they are. It also means that this week’s race at Phoenix is going to be filled with dicey moves, and a lot of controversy.

So far, none of the Chase drivers has won a race in the Eliminator round, so there will be at least three drivers who get to move to the championship based on points, and right now all eight of the drivers can make it one points after the next race. This should be one of the most exciting races ever run in Phoenix.

QUICKEN LOANS RACE FOR HEROES 500

Phoenix International Raceway is a one-mile D-shaped oval that is fairly flat in the turns. It was reconfigured in 2010 to its current look. It is also the only oval NASCAR track that measures it race length in kilometers. The only other two races measured in kilometers are the road-course races in Sonoma and Watkins Glen.

So the race is 500-km, which equates to 312-miles and 312 laps. This makes it a fairly short race, but don’t let the length fool you. A driver can find themselves lapped in no time at all and it is difficult to get those laps back in this short race. That means a driver better have a great handling car right from the get go or they will be in trouble.

Kevin Harvick: Kevin has won five races at Phoenix in his career and is my pick to win this race and propel himself into the championship race. Kevin has won three of the last four races here and also finished runner-up the race before those four. They still need to be flawless in the pits and make the right calls all through the race to be in contention at the end.

Brad Keselowski: Brad has yet to win a race at Phoenix, but he has finished in the top six in four of his last five starts here. I think another top five finish should be enough to qualify Brad for the final race of the season, and a shot at his second Sprint Cup championship.

Jeff Gordon: It took Jeff seventeen tries to get his first ever win at this track and then he won twice. This team has been so good all season and now they have to fight to move to the final race with a chance to win their fifth championship. An altercation on the track late in the race at Texas has put this team into a position where they can ill afford to make any mistakes.

Denny Hamlin: Denny has won one race here during his career, but he has finished in the top five in eight of his eighteen starts. This is the type of track that this team excels at and I think they will come with a car that is capable of running up front all day. Points are going to be at a premium for all drivers still in the Chase, because only one of these drivers can make the final race with a win.

Carl Edwards: Carl has won two races at this track in his career and has finished in the top ten in twelve of his twenty starts here. This team hasn’t looked good in any of the races since the Chase started, but they always make a comeback at the end and keep themselves in contention. Carl can get a top five finish here and qualify for the championship race and surprise a lot of people in his last season at Roush/Fenway Racing.

Ryan Newman: Ryan has one win at Phoenix and has finished in the top ten here in seven of his last nine starts. This team in another team that not many people thought could win the championship in their first season together, but they have impressed during the Chase and have been improving every week. They need another great run to move to the final round.

Matt Kenseth: Matt got his lone win here twelve years ago and hasn’t run consistently well here over the past six seasons. This team is going to have to figure a way to set up their car from the start of the race, or they are going to find themselves eliminated from this years Chase.

Jimmie Johnson: Even though Jimmie isn’t in the Chase any longer, this team is still going to try to win these last two races and we have seen them go on runs like that before. Jimmie is right behind Kevin Harvick in number of wins with four at this track, and he has also finished in the top five in an astounding fourteen of his twenty-two starts here.


Dale Earnhardt.: This team was also eliminated from the Chase in the second round, but they won the first race of the Eliminator round and have three straight top five finishes at Phoenix. Dale won the races here in 2003 and 2004, so he knows how to get the job done and I think he has gotten better here with a little advice from teammate, Jimmie Johnson.

Joey Logano: Joey has five top ten finishes in eleven starts at Phoenix and two in a row. This team has proved that they are better at every track this year than they have been in the past and is looking for redemption after losing some points last week after a late race altercation where he blew a tire. They need a top ten finish to make the championship race in my opinion.

2014 Texas Motor Speedway, AAA Texas 500

The first race of the Eliminator Round is in the books, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. picks up the win. This means that because Dale has already been eliminated from the Chase, at least two drivers will make it to the championship race via points. A couple of the Chase drivers had very poor finishes and now find themselves in a position where they will probably have to win one of the next two races to make it to the championship race.

This week the series heads back to Texas Motor Speedway, the mile and a half track that is very similar to the rest of the intermediate tracks on the circuit. Once again a 500-mile race will take its toll on some engines and tires have been a concern most of the year for various drivers. The drivers who struggle on the short tracks really need to run well this weekend before the final race of this round is run at Phoenix.

AAA TEXAS 500

Jimmie Johnson: I am picking Jimmie to break out of his recent slump and get back to victory lane this week at Texas. Jimmie has won two of the last four races and both of them were during the Chase. Even though Jimmie was eliminated from the Chase, this team is going to fight for another win this season.

Matt Kenseth: Matt has yet to win a race this season and this is one of the tracks that he can get that first win at. Matt has won two races at Texas during his career. He has also finished in the top ten in seventeen of his twenty-four starts here and has the best average finish of any driver at Texas over their careers.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Even though this team has been eliminated from the Chase they are still running hard and running well as we come to the last few races of the season. Dale has run well at all types of tracks this season and I think he will have a fast car once again the weekend in Texas. He won the very first race ever run at this track, but that was a long time ago.

Denny Hamlin: Denny swept the races here back in 2010 and was very disappointed with his finish last week at Martinsville. He felt that he had a car capable of winning last week and that would have given him the free pass into the championship race at Homestead. Now they need to run well over the next two races and they have two tracks they are very capable of winning at.

Joey Logano: This team has been fast all season. Now we will see how they perform under extreme pressure on a track that they should be favored to finish in the top five at. Joey won the spring race here and has finished in the top five in his last three starts at this track. They will be looking for the sweep this weekend and they could very well get it.

Brad Keselowski: After winning the race at Talladega to move to the Eliminator round of the Chase, Brad had mechanical trouble at Martinsville and finds himself once again in a must win situation somewhere during the next two races. This team has been just as fast as their teammate, Joey Logano, every week and they lead the series in wins.

Kevin Harvick: Kevin took the biggest hit of all the Chase drivers at Martinsville when he and Matt Kenseth got tangled up on the track and Kevin had to go to the garage to get his car back on the track and try to salvage as many spots as he could. Now they almost have to win one of the next two races, but the good news is that they have a good chance of winning one of the next two races because they run very well at both of these tracks.

Carl Edwards: Carl didn’t have the best race at Martinsville and has some work to do to get back in contention. However, Carl has won three races at Texas and runs well at Phoenix, so he has a good chance of making it to the championship race. They can ill afford another poor finish though, or they will be in the same position as the other drivers who need to win to have a shot.

Jeff Gordon: Jeff leads the point standings at the moment, by virtue of his second place finish at Martinsville. It’s nice to be in the lead, but Jeff would have rather won the race. Now they need to run well over the next two weeks to move into the championship race. Jeff finished second in the race here in April of this year and has shown that he can get the job done on any track he runs on this season.


Ryan Newman: Ryan had a great run once again at Martinsville, where he picked up a third place finish. Even though they are another team that hasn’t won a race yet this season, they have put themselves in position to move on to the next round if they can come away with two more top five finishes. I think Texas will be their toughest test between the next two races.

2014 Martinsville Speedway, Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Contender round is in the books and the start of the Eliminator round starts next Sunday. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, and Kyle Busch were all knocked out of the Chase. There are eight drivers left with a chance to win this year’s Sprint Cup championship and after the next three races we will be down to four drivers and one race to determine this season’s champion.

GOODY’S HEADACHE RELIEF SHOT 500

The first race of the Eliminator round will be held at Martinsville Speedway. Martinsville, at .526-miles in length, is the shortest track in the NASCAR series. With only 12 degrees of banking in the corners, it is also one of the flattest tracks on the circuit. It is shaped like a paperclip and has asphalt for straightaways and concrete through the turns. Trust me, there is going to be a lot of bumping and banging once again this week as eight drivers try to advance to the next round and thirty-five other drivers just try to get a win.

Jeff Gordon: I am picking Jeff to win this race and advance to the NASCAR Sprint Cup title race. Jeff only made it into this round by three points and he doesn’t want to come that close to being eliminated again. Jeff has won eight races during his career at Martinsville including this race last year. I think he will repeat that feat and propel himself to the final round.

Jimmie Johnson: Even though Jimmie has been eliminated from the Chase, this team is still going to do everything they can to win more races. Jimmie also has eight wins at this track and will give Jeff a run for his money in this race. I just don’t know what happens if the race is between Jeff and Jimmie at the end. Does Jimmie give Jeff the win so Hendrick Motorsports has a guaranteed qualifier for the championship, or does he do everything in his power to win the race?

Denny Hamlin: Denny is still in the Chase and he is another driver who has always been very good at this track also. Denny has four wins at this track, although he hasn’t won a race here since 2010. I think if Denny is going to win a Chase race it is either going to be here or at Phoenix during this stretch. Still, he has finished in the top five in over half of the races he has run here.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Dale has never won a race at Martinsville during his career, but he has finished in the top ten there in over half of his starts. This team is disappointed they didn’t advance in the Chase and needs to continue to improve and try and pick up wins as they look towards next season. They need to become more consistent and that is something they can work on now.

Tony Stewart: Tony has struggled for much of this season, but he still has a driver in the Chase in Kevin Harvick. Tony has three wins at Martinsville and has finished in the top ten in half of his starts at this track. He will be an invaluable asset to Kevin this week, because he can give him advice on how to get around this track. Look for him to be a factor in this race.

Kevin Harvick: Kevin has one win at Martinsville and has run very well there lately. He has five top ten finishes in his last eight starts there including the win back in the spring of 2011. This team has been fast every week and has looked good during the Chase. I think they will be one of the teams to move on to the final round.

Brad Keselowski: Brad has yet to win a race here in his career, but he has only run here nine times. During those nine races he has finished in the top ten five times with his best finish being fourth. He had to win the race at Talladega last week to advance and once again he fought through adversity, in the form of an early race accident, and came away with the win he needed. Never count this team out.

Joey Logano: Joey, like Brad has won two races during the Chase and will be looking for another one this weekend. Martinsville hasn’t been one of his better tracks, as he has only three top ten finishes in eleven starts here. However he did finish fourth in the spring race and this team has also been fast most every week of the season.

Jamie McMurray: Jamie has some trouble last week at Talladega, but this team has been running very well over the past couple of months. Jamie has only one top five finish here in twenty-three starts, but he has finished in the top ten in twelve of those starts. He might not win here, but he does know how to drive on this track.
