NASCAR’s move to get rid of pre-planned stage cautions at road courses didn’t make it the entirety of the 2023 season.

The sanctioning body announced Tuesday morning that the Oct. 8 Cup Series playoff race at the Charlotte roval would feature cautions at the conclusion of the first two stages. The move comes as some road course races in the Cup Series have featured very few caution flags compared to other races this season.

I guess they needed more non-racing time to keep the TV commercial people happy.

But changing this rule with less than a season’s worth of data and with one road course race to go in 2023 is extremely short-sighted and looks incredibly manipulative. It’s impossible to view the announcement by NASCAR as anything other than the sanctioning body’s desire to have more caution flags and the restarts that follow them at Charlotte.

It also reeks that NASCAR is making this change for its only road course race of the playoffs. The race at the Charlotte roval is the final race of the second round of the playoffs. By reinstating stage cautions, NASCAR sure looks like it’s wanting more crashes for playoff drama.

Watkins Glen is one of my favorite tracks but this year it really was a bore. With no cautions the field got strung out and cars pretty much just maintained their position with really no opportunity to pass. From there it is pit strategy that wins the races, not the best car or driver.

From a fantasy perspective though the stage cautions mean that drivers who are interested in gaining track position will pit 2-3 laps before stage end so they'll come out ahead of the cars that pit during the stage break. That means it's really hard to predict what drivers will get stage points.

Honestly, I think having the stage cautions is better if it makes the racing more interesting.

i hope they go single file restarts, so the crashfest is limited after the stage breaks.
guys in 12th place that were over 10 seconds behind the leader at the stage break are now sitting in row 6 divebombing for quick positions on the restart.
just too much chaos after the stage break.

Don't bet the farm on that one. The double file restarts bunch up the field and create passing opportunities, along with the ensuing chaos. Didn't Nascar used to have single file restarts in the last 10 laps years ago?

No matter what anyone else does ...Hamlin clinches with 14 pts (23rd if no stage pts at Bristol), Byron 22 (15th w/no stage pts), Keselowski 30 (7th w/no stage pts) ... rest depend on stages ... Blaney 38 pts, Busch 39, Chastain with 45, Buescher 50, Bell 50, Logano 51
