NASCAR FANTASY LIVE PICKS, 2015 CHICAGOLAND, MYAFIBRISK.COM 400

The Chase has now started.

Like most weeks, you should front-load your lineup. I do not anticipate this week to be one where there is a great disparity in the standings because the laps led statistic is historically spread out. Congratulations to those of you who did not take my advice and rostered Matt Kenseth. Your standings took a hit if he missed your lineup.

The good news for Fantasy NASCAR players is that we now do not have to worry about teams experimented since the races matter now for all teams. You should concentrate on drivers who are Chase eligible since they have the most to race for in the next 10 races.

Kevin Harvick will continue to be my recommended pick for your roster. With the most laps and fast laps of any driver in 2015, Harvick provides a high probability for success every week. He also has the most top-5 finishes and the best average finish position of any driver in the series. In last year’s race at Chicago, Harvick led the most laps on his way to a 4th place finish. Harvick has three top-10 finishes in his last five races in Chicago. In eight large oval track races in 2015, Harvick has 403 laps led and 271 fast laps. Both numbers are good for the best in the series. He also boasts a 7th place average finish position and 96% of his laps inside the top-15 for similarly configured tracks. When you combine track success, track type success and 2015 success, you have a driver who you want in your lineup.

While the #2 and Brad Keselowski have not been an elite team in 2015, they are still one of the 10 best teams. Keselowski won the Chicago race in 2014, and led 62 laps on his way to the checkered flag. With three top-5 finishes in his last five Chicago races and two wins at the track, Keselowski has proven to be able to find success. On large oval tracks in 2015, Keselowski has finished inside the top-10 in all eight races. With an average finish position of 6.3 and 95% of his laps inside the top-15 for similarly tracks, Keselowski should continue his success this week in Chicago.

The decision for the third roster spot became a decision between Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, and Kyle Busch. Jimmie Johnson has the best track history, and Joey Logano has the best 2015 numbers of the three drivers. The Hendricks cars have not been as dominant, and I did not like Logano’s track numbers at Chicago. As a result, the recommended third driver is Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch finished in 7th place in 2014 while leading 46 laps during the race. He has three top-10 finishes in his last five races. With four wins in 2015, his team has proved itself to be one of the best in the series since July. While his numbers at large oval tracks is mediocre, Kyle Busch won at Kentucky earlier this season. Unless he struggles in qualifying, Kyle Busch will find his way onto my roster this week.

With a front-loaded lineup, the drawback is that there is not a lot of salary cap room for the final two roster spots. David Ragan is starting to find a pattern of having no fantasy value due to his qualifying speeds. The start-to-finish differential is hurting his value. Nonetheless, he has a 20th place average finish position over his last five Chicago races. You would be hard-pressed to find a better driver. I barely had enough budget for the fifth roster spot. This will tentatively go to Brett Moffitt, who is averaging a 30th place finish in 2015. As always, I will keep an eye on qualifying and may consider the 43rd driver in hopes of start-to-finish differential points.

FANTASY NASCAR LIVE SALARY CAP

Fantasy Live on nascar.com uses a scoring system that combines fast laps, laps led, average finish position, or start-to-finish differential. In order to prevent us from starting the best drivers each week, Fantasy Live uses a salary cap format. Our formula calculate the number of Fantasy Live points earned by each driver over the last five Chicago races. Next, we divide the number by the Fantasy Live salary cap figure. The end result is a number that provides us with an idea of which drivers provide value each week. Jimmie Johnson has the most laps led over the past five Chicago races, yet missed my lineup. As a consolation prize, we will use his Chicago numbers over the past five races to explain the formula.

JIMMIE JOHNSON AT CHICAGOLAND

  • Average finish position last five Chicago races: 10.8 equals 33.2 Fantasy Live points
  • Start-to-finish differential: Negative 4.6 equals negative 4.6 Fantasy Live points
  • Laps Led: 343 equals 34.3 Fantasy Live points
  • Fast laps: 217 equals 21.7 Fantasy Live points
  • Total Fantasy Live points last five Chicago races: 84.6
  • Fantasy Live Salary Cap Figure: $26.25
  • Points per Fantasy Dollar: 84.6 divided by $26.25 equals 3.22

Below you see the Fantasy Live points per dollar for each driver entered in this week’s race. Suggested picks are in bold. NASCAR Fantasy Live Picks, 2014 Chicagoland, MYAFIBSTORY.COM 400

Last week, Fantasy Live was separated into two groups: those who started Brad Keselowski and those who did not start Brad Keselowski. The dominating effort prevented drivers from sneaking into the Chase with a win. The playoff lineup is set at Chicago, and we get the see the drivers in the new playoff format for the first time. There was only one driver I liked this week, and the other four roster spots were designated to two top drivers and two bottom feeders. My recommendation, like most weeks, is to pick your three favorite drivers and fill your last two spots with the best drivers available.

My favorite driver this week has almost triple the amount of laps led over the last five years compared to the second-best driver in this category. Since 2005, Jimmie Johnson has an average running position of 7.1 and has run in the top 15 for 87% of his laps. Johnson has finished in the top 10 for seven of his last nine races. As long as he does not have a tire issue, I like Jimmie Johnson as a top driver this week.

After watching Brad Keselowski drive lap after lap in first place at Richmond, my subconscious is making him my second pick. Keselowski has a fourth place average finish position at the track over the past three years. Since 2005, Keselowski has the seventh-most laps led and fast laps. These numbers are not great, but Brad Keselowski with an average track history in 2014 still has a high probability for success. The third selection for my roster has led the second-most laps over the last five years and has now won a race in 2014. Matt Kenseth has been steady with an average running position of 10.3 and 72% of his laps in the top 15.

With three of the highest salary cap drivers on my roster, there is little cap room for the remaining two drivers. Reed Sorenson has an average running position of 24.7 and has recently led 6 laps at the track. He gets a slight edge over Landon Cassill, who only has a 31st place average finish at the track. With limited salary cap funds available, the fifth slot will go to Michael Annett. With a 28th place average finish in 2014, Annett does not need too much to provide value.

FANTASY NASCAR LIVE SALARY CAP

Fantasy Live on nascar.com uses a scoring system that combines fast laps, laps led, finish position, and start-to-finish differential. In order to prevent us from simply selecting the top drivers every week, the website uses a salary cap format. Our formula calculates the average number of fantasy live points over the past five years divided by the driver’s salary cap figure. The final number gives us an idea how many fantasy live points to expect from each salary cap dollar. Tony Stewart has great track data at Chicago, but is still a risky pick. Because he is the odd man out on my roster, we will use his Chicago data to illustrate our formula.

TONY STEWART AT CHICAGOLAND

  • Total laps led last five years at Chicago: 4 laps equals 0.4 points per race
  • Fast laps: Cannot be calculated with 100% accuracy
  • Average finish position: 5th place average equals 39 fantasy live points per race
  • Start-to-finish differential: Plus 18 equals 18 fantasy live points per race
  • Total points per race: 57.4
  • Fantasy Live Salary Cap Figure $22.25
  • Fantasy Live points per dollar: 57.4 divides by 22.25 equals 2.58 fantasy live points per race

Please see each driver’s fantasy points per dollar below. We will use the 2014 history for rookie drivers with no historical data at Chicago to give you an idea what to expect from them. This week’s suggested picks are in bold.

  • Clint Bowyer 1.68

2014 Chicagoland Speedway, MyAFibStory.com 400

The field for the Chase is set with the Challenger round beginning next week at Chicagoland Speedway. Brad Keselowski leads the pack by virtue of his four wins this season after last weekend’s victory at Richmond. A race that Brad dominated, leading 383 of the 400 laps. Each driver is given three bonus points for each win they acquired during the first twenty-six races this season as they enter the Chase.

The rules of the new Chase format are pretty simple. The Chase is separated into four stages. The Challenger round, the Contender round, the Eliminator round, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship round. The first three stages are each three races long, while the last race of the season will determine this year’s champion. Win and you automatically move on to the next round, the four drivers with the lowest point totals and no wins will be eliminated. An accident, mechanical failure, or mistake on pit road by driver, crew-chief, or pit crew member could eliminate a driver.

MYAFIBSTORY.COM 400

Kevin Harvick: Kevin is my pick to win the championship this season and I think he starts out the Chase with his fourth victory of the season and automatically qualifies for the next round of the Chase. He has two wins at Chicagoland and has been very fast all season. I think he runs as well as he did at Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, but avoids the disaster he found at the end of that race.

Jeff Gordon: I think Jeff is the next best contender of the Chase field. Jeff has been very consistent on all types of tracks this season and won three races so far. He also has a win at Chicagoland Speedway and has shown a lot of speed on this type of track. Jeff has won four championships in his career, but none of those have come under the Chase format.

Joey Logano: Both Joey and Brad Keselowski have had great seasons. I believe Joey has been better than Brad on the intermediate tracks though and I think he will have another great car once again this weekend. This team has won three races already this season and they have the confidence that they can compete for the championship this year.

Brad Keselowski: Brad leads the series in victories, so that gives him a three point lead heading into the Chase. This team has had a fast car all season and should easily make it into the second round as long as they don’t have a disaster on the track. They haven’t really had many tire issues or engine issues all year and that eliminates that issue from a drivers mind.

Jimmie Johnson: Let’s not forget about the six time champion as we head into the Chase. This team hasn’t been on the top of their game much of the season, but they know how to win championships. They have run a little better over the past five or six races and just need to find a little more to get back to their winning ways. While Jimmie has never won a race at Chicagoland, he has finished in the top ten in ten of his twelve starts here. That alone gives them confidence heading to this track this weekend.

Ryan Newman: Ryan is currently in the final spot of the Chase by virtue of the tiebreaker of how many top five finishes he has had on the season. This means virtually nothing as the Chase starts and I think Ryan has the mindset not to worry about things like that anyway. Ryan has won a race at this track and has finished in the top ten in eight of his twelve starts here. This is a sleeper team to watch right now.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Dale has won a race here and has run very well on the intermediate tracks all season. They need to make one more adjustment that will help them to win one of these races seeing there are so many of them in the Chase. I think this team has a chance at winning a championship this season, but I think they are going to have to win at least one more race to do it.

Tony Stewart: Tony leads all drivers with three wins at this track. He has also finished in the top ten in ten of his twelve starts here and only Jimmie Johnson has lead more laps at Chicagoland than Tony over their careers. Tony is my dark horse to win this race and get his team on the right track for next season.

Kasey Kahne: Kasey won the race at Atlanta a couple of weeks ago and that victory propelled him into the Chase. The track at Chicago is very similar to the Atlanta track, so this team should come with a good setup already under their car. They are going to need to win races to stay in contention because they haven’t been consistent enough to keep making it through the elimination rounds without wins.

Matt Kenseth: Matt won the first two races of the Chase last season including the race at Chicago. This is the closest track to Matt’s hometown of Cambridge, Wisconsin and he would love to get another victory to move himself into the next round and make his local fans very happy. I think this team is consistent enough and can start winning races during the Chase to be serious contenders for the championship.
